About the Visual Diary

For the last seven years, Nancy Warner has used a Canon Elph 370z APS camera to create a record of her daily visual experiences. In recent years she has also started using digital cameras in much the same way.

There are now thousands of these images, with new ones added almost every day. She sorts through new ones periodically, scans the most interesting, and groups them in physical and/or electronic albums by subject or compositional themes. These albums function much like sketchbooks. Sometimes she returns to a particular place better equipped to explore the possibilities more formally in black and white. In other cases the original image is complete by itself.

As time goes by, she edits the images further, enhances the color digitally and, without further manipulation or cropping of the image, creates inkjet prints in a variety of sizes.

Many recent visual diary images can be viewed in the Image of the Week photoblog. The Good Humus project originated with visual diary images taken at Good Humus Farm. The Oppositions installation at Gallery OneZero also incorporated Kodak prints from the early days of this project.
